Turn of the First Clay : Our Brickmaking Heritage

It is claimed with some justification that brickmaking was the first secondary industry established in Australia. Within a very short time of the arrival of the First Fleet, convicts were put to work producing handmade bricks. Brickfield Hill, south of Sydney Town Hall, commemorates the headquarters of this early industry.
